A printer is a device that transports data from a computer’s text and graphical output to paper, typically 8.5″ by 11″ standard-sized paper. The size, speed, sophistication, and cost of printers vary. Generally, higher-end printers are utilized for higher-volume printing or high-resolution color printing.

Personal computer printers can be divided into impact and non-impact printers. Early impact printers worked like automatic typewriters, with keys that printed an impression of ink on paper for each character printed. Dot matrix printers, impact printers that print paper one line at a time, are a popular low-cost option.

The most famous non-impact printers are inkjet printers and laser printers. Inkjets spray ink from a printer at a very close distance to the paper as the paper rolls, whereas laser printers use light reflected from a mirror to attract ink (called toner) to certain areas of the paper as the sheet is rolled on a drum.

Various types of printers

Many different printer manufacturers are available today, including Canon, Epson, Hewlett-Packard, Xerox, Lexmark, and many others. There are also several types of printers to choose from, which we’ll discuss below. Inkjet printers recreate digital images by spraying ink onto paper. It is the most common type of personal printer.

Laser printers produce high-quality prints by emitting a laser beam at high speed through a drum that emits a negative charge to define the image. Color laser printers are more commonly found in professional environments.

3D printers are a relatively new printer technology. 3D printing creates physical objects from digital files. It works by adding layer after layer of material until the printing job is complete and the object is complete.

Thermal printers produce images on paper by passing paper with a thermochromic coating over a print head consisting of an electrically heated element and producing an image in areas where the heated coating turns black. Dye sublimation printers are a form of thermal printing technology that uses heat to transfer dye to materials.

An all-in-one printer is a multifunction device that combines printing with other technologies, such as a copier, scanner, and fax machine. LED printers are similar to laser printers but use a series of light-emitting diodes in the print head instead of a laser. Photo printers are similar to inkjet printers but are specifically designed to print high-quality photos, which require lots of ink and special paper to ensure the ink doesn’t bleed.

In short

Depending on the type of application you want to print, choosing between the different types of printers available is very important. In principle, inkjet printers are better for printing high-quality photos, while laser printers are best suited for large volumes of business documents. When saving money on printing, continuous ink printers will give you the best high-quality prints and lower running costs. However, if the print quality is below your requirements, choosing an LED printer or Dot Matrix printing unit (if you can find one) will get the job done.
